Johnny Manziel failed to get the starting job in the upcoming NFL season, but Cleveland Browns general manager Ray Farmer still believes that they made the right decision in drafting the former Texas A&M standout.

Farmer said in an interview that Manziel, the 22nd overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, is doing just fine and he is still confident that the 21-year-old will develop into a franchise player in the near future.

"I think he is right where he's supposed to be," Farmer said in an ESPN interview when asked to assess Manziel's progress.

Farmer pointed out that most fans have exaggerated expectations for Manziel, saying that the rookie quarterback will need more than four weeks of training camp to show what he is capable of doing.

"It's like anything else," Farmer said. "If you're learning a foreign language, guess what, you're not going to go to Spain tomorrow and in four weeks feel like you're fluent in the language and just start talking. It just doesn't happen like that. You may be able to communicate, but not effectively."

Manziel played in his first game as an official backup to starting QB Brian Hoyer on Saturday against the St. Louis Cardinals where he was used halfway through the third period. He completed 10-of-15 passes for 85 yards with no turnovers, but it was not enough as the Browns took a 33-14 loss against the Rams.

Manziel, who said that he is more motivated to work on his game after failing to edge Hoyer in the race to start for the Browns next season, has been performing well in their preseason games. Manziel finished 24-of-42 passes for 213 yards in three preseason matches.

Browns coach recently said that using a two-quarterback system is on the table to utilize the strengths of both Manziel and Hoyer next season. When asked about the proposed two-quarterback system, Manziel said that he is ready to contribute anytime.

"I feel like any way I can help contribute to this team, whether it's looking at a certain coverage, looking at something during the game, or getting in and having a certain package during the game, just anything that I can do to help this offense to win games -- that's the position I'm in and that's all I really want to do," Manziel said.
