Boston Celtics guard Rajon Rondo is expected to miss the start of the 2014-15 NBA season after undergoing surgery to repair a broken left hand, the team announced on Friday.

According to ESPN, Rondo sustained a fracture of a left metacarpal in a fall at this home on Thursday night, and immediately underwent surgery, which would require him to sit out for at least six weeks.

Boston.com reported that most fans have doubts on how Rondo sustained the injury, with most of them saying that Rondo's injury may have been sustained from a punch, but the team is reportedly convinced that the superstar guard hurt his hand when he slipped in the shower.

Without Rondo, the Celtics are expected to consider starting either Phil Pressey or Marcus Smart, the sixth overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. Losing Rondo for at least 10 games would also give the Celtics a chance to take a look at their team without the superstar point guard, which would be the case if they decide to trade the 28-year-old.

The Celtics have remained firm on their plan to keep Rondo, with team owner Wyc Grousbeck saying that he will do anything possible to convince the former Kentucky standout to stay in Boston.

"It's my goal to keep Rondo here," Grousbeck said via ESPN. "I think we all want that. And I actually honestly think -- he should speak for himself -- I think Rajon wants to stay or would be very happy to stay. And we'll see how this season goes and how the negotiations go, but he's proud to be a Celtic. I know that."

Rondo averaged 11.7 points to go along with 9.8 assists and 5.5 rebounds per game last season, but has only played in 30 games after recovering from an ACL injury. The All-Star guard will be playing in the final year of his contract in the upcoming season before become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
