Maite Perroni's mother, Maite Beorlegui, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010, and has since beaten the disease.

Beorlegui wrote a book, "No Te La Creas," which aims to help people who are fighting cancer. Beorlegui explains that it is a "personal testimony," and at an event to promote her book, her daughter was by her side.

"The example was my mother," she said. "If she didn't have that attitude, that strength and that interest, it would have been very different for the rest of us being near her and supporting her. She gave us the example. She gave us the strength when she woke up every morning with a smile on her face, and she's the one that made us feel as though everything would be all right."

Perroni also explained how the experience taught her to be more thankful for life, and just as importantly, to learn and try to do things in a better way. Perroni noted the necessity of checkups and how early detection is key.

Beorlegui echoed these sentiments.

"Cancer is not synonymous with death," she said. "And breast cancer that's found in time-90 percent of the time-it can be conquered."

In 2012, Beorlegui explained that she wasn't afraid of getting breast cancer again. She said that she learned so much and that know that she's lived it, she knows what she's up against.

Perroni previously teamed up with Pantene for "Beautiful Lengths," which gave women free wigs through the American Cancer Society.

"After going through this experience, it prompted me to spread this message of hope to other people," Perroni said. "I'm very grateful for this opportunity because the solution is really in our hands. We can actively take care of our bodies and get the necessary checkups we, especially women, need, like mammograms. By getting exams on time, not only will you become more aware of your body, but you'll also be able to detect cancer early and fight back on time."
