The New York Knicks are off to a good start this season after winning in two of their first three games, but the team is expected to make moves as the season progresses in order to improve their roster.

Marc Berman of New York Post reported that Knicks president Phil Jackson is expected to look for deals that could improve their playoff chances this season, with sources indicating that J.R. Smith will likely be the odd man out before the annual trade deadline in February.

According to the report, Jackson is still weighing his options on Smith, but sources revealed that the Knicks recently discussed a potential trade that would send the 29-year-old to the Indiana Pacers in exchange for Chris Copeland.

Before the season started, Jackson admitted that he is unsure if Smith could fit into coach Derek Fisher's system.

Aside from the fact that Copeland looks like a better fit to New York's triangle offense than Smith, the Knicks are also interested in acquiring the Pacers forward because of his expiring deal.

Copeland, who spent his rookie season with the Knicks before bolting out last year, is playing in the final year of his contract, which means that the Knicks won't lose anything if he fails to fit into their system because the 30-year-old won't hurt their cap space next summer.

On the other hand, Smith has two years left in his contract, but he could opt out of the final year and become a free agent next summer. However, the streak shooter is expected to opt in and test free agency in 2016. The salary cap is expected to increase significantly in the summer of 2016 because of a new television deal.

Smith, who averaged 8.0 points and 4.0 assists in their first three games this season, admitted that he is struggling to adjust to their new system because he is used to his shoot-first mentality.

"I mean, believe it or not, being the type of player I've been, it's a struggle. I'm not going to lie," Smith said in an ESPN interview late last month. "Trying to think about the rest of the team over myself or my scoring is something that I never really had to do before."
