Two young boys playing on the beach in Sydney, Australia found the decomposed body of an infant, the second abandoned baby to be found in the city in a week.

The Associated Press reported that the boys, aged 6 and 7 years old, found the naked body in the sand Sunday while playing, according to New South Wales state police Inspector Andrew Holland. The body of the infant found by the two boys was too badly decomposed to determine a gender, but an autopsy will be performed.

News.com.au reported that the father of the two boys tried to calm them after the discovery by telling them it was the body of a dog.

Police are asking the mother and father of the baby to come forward and said they are concerned about the welfare of the mother, hoping that she sought medical assistance after the birth. They are investigating whether or not the baby was stillborn. They are also reportedly considering the possibility that the infant was a few days old before it was buried.

There was very little evidence left for the investigation since neither clothing nor a blanket were left with the baby. However, the footage from security cameras of nearby shops may hold clues as to the identity of the parents or the timeframe of when the baby was buried.

"We're making some inquiries through births, deaths and marriages to determine where we can find the parents of this child," Holland said. "We're hopeful the parents will come forward."

Police said the two boys who found the baby are receiving counseling, as well as some of the lifeguards.

A week prior, a group of cyclists found a newborn baby alive and crying at the bottom of a roadside drain. The baby was found after five days of being in the drain, and the mother has been charged with attempted murder.
