Comedian Bill Cosby has resigned from the board of trustees of Temple University in Philadelphia, according to a statement from the university.

Spokesman for the university, Brandon Lausch, confirmed the resignation Monday.

"I have always been proud of my association with Temple University," Cosby said in the statement. "I have always wanted to do what would be in the best interests of the university and its students. As a result, I have tendered my resignation from the Temple University Board of Trustees."

The university statement added that the school "accepts Dr. Cosby's resignation from the board and thanks him for his service to the university."

His resignation comes amid several alleged victims and journalists coming forward with stories of Cosby's sexual assault of multiple women. Rumors were circulating Monday that the board was due to meet and discuss whether the actor would be allowed to keep his seat and close ties to the school where he earned his undergraduate degree.

Last week, Temple stuck up for their famed alum, despite multiple accusations that Cosby drugged and sexually assaulted multiple women decades ago.

Nelson Diaz, one of the members of the university's board, told BillyPenn.com that the Board of Trustees was planning to discuss the star's involvement with the institution moving forward.

"They're going to have a meeting on that issue," Diaz told the Philadelphia-focused website. "So I don't know what they're going to do with that. They just sent out a notice for the meeting [scheduled for Dec.9]."

Cosby has not been charged or convicted of any crime from these allegations, nor has he said much in response to the rape accusations. However, his professional career has been hurtdue to the negative media attention he is receiving.

While on a comedy tour, Netflix announced they would not be releasing a stand-up special featuring Cosby. Soon after, NBC revealed they were dropping the comedy sitcom they were developing with the actor. Other colleges and universities have also cancelled speaking gigs he was scheduled to give.
