"The Wire" actor Idris Elba is set to star in a six-part docu-series on Discovery Channel UK,

The series, which is tentatively titled "The Idris Elba Project," will feature the 42-year-old actor attempting to master a wide array of extreme sports including alley driving, street racing, aerobatics and power boating, Deadline reports.

"I'm taking on the toughest racing challenges of my life for this new Discovery TV series," Elba said in a statement. "Along the way I'll meet extraordinary individuals, spectacular machines and hear amazing stories of how far people go to satisfy their love of speed. The extreme challenges will take me right out of my comfort zone as I compete against the best on land, water and in the air."

In addition to learning new sporting skills, Elba will also teach viewers the history and science behind the sports, says the Hollywood Reporter.

"The Idris Elba Project" is scheduled to premiere sometime during mid-2015. It will air in more than 220 countries and territories, including the U.S., and will film across the U.K., Florida, and California. The adventure series will be produced by Shine North and Elba's production company, Green Door Pictures.

"This landmark series will take viewers on a journey with Idris to experience the adrenalin rush and thrill of speed, a passion for him and our audience," Susanna Dinnage, Discovery UK's executive VP and managing director, said in a statement.

Prior to "The Idris Elba Project," Elba starred in another docu-series last year, titled "King of Speed," which aired on BBC, says the Daily Mail.

According to BBC America, "King of Speed" featured Elba traveling around the world to explore the history behind the world's underground racing scene.
