Spanish Foreign Minister launched "EFE: 75 Years," a photo exhibition celebrating the 75th anniversary of the country's international news agency.

Agencia EFE's exhibit is displayed in Mexico. Spanish Foreign minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo inaugurated the collection of photos Monday.

"I have been a member of the European Parliament for 17 years, I've always been in Ibero-American delegations, I've taken part in association accords. It has been a joy for me to see these photos, to see the image of my country projected," Spain's Foreign Minister said.

"Above all that area I feel as my own, which is the Ibero-American community of nations."

The exhibit shows a photographic journey through the modern history and contemporary issues of Spain and Latin America. Exhibits celebrating 75 years of the Spanish-language agency were also shown in Peru and Panama.

The photos were selected to show "what has been our life for 75 years, from black and white ... to our time, in which EFE has transformed itself into an international agency with a presence in 180 cities," EFE President Jose Antonio Vera said.

One of the photos on display showed what may be the first doctored photograph of an encounter with Adolf Hitler and Gen. Francisco Franco, discovered by EFE.

"We feel very committed to Latin America and particularly to Central America, as the first regional agency," Vera said.

Spain's diplomat said the exhibit in Mexico "produces a certain nostalgia and notable pride" as well as "much desire to work enormously to make our ties ever more intense."

Garcia-Margallo says the photos remind him that democracy was not free. There is a photo of King Juan Carlos signing the new constitution of 1977. There is another photo of a coup attempt by the monarch in 1981.

Photos of the exhibit were picked from an archive of over 17 million pictures.
