The NYPD is investigating an accident that occurred after a car jumped the curb near the Empire State Building on Wednesday night, injuring seven people.

The incident took place at around 10 p.m. in Midtown Manhattan's Herald Square shopping center. That's when police saw a car jumped a curb, injuring five pedestrians. The 34-year-old female driver and a male passenger were also injured, reports the Associated Press.

According to officials, the driver was traveling eastbound on 34th Street when she struck another vehicle from behind. She then backed up and ended up on the westbound side, heading in the wrong direction and hitting another vehicle. As a result, the car mounted the sidewalk and hit a handful of pedestrians. All seven victims were taken to a local hospital for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver, however, has been arrested and is being investigated for possible drunken driving.

Meanwhile, the top of the Empire State Building was lit with bright blue lights in honor of Human Rights Day on Dec. 10. The international holiday celebrates human rights awareness and the Human Rights Watch's commitment to protect and defend human rights for people around the world. The 2014 theme was called "Human Rights 365."

"We're thrilled to see New York's most famous building honor the work of Human Rights Watch," said Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch, in a statement. "We hope it will inspire everyone to do what they can for human rights, here at home and across the globe."

Human Rights Day sets out to recognize the rights that were adopted in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on Dec. 10, 1948. The proposal outlines a wide range of rights and freedoms guaranteed to all people around the globe.

According to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, defending human rights should be a priority every day.

"I call on states to honor their obligation to protect human rights every day of the year. I call on people to hold their governments to account," he said, according to the HRW.
