In case you have not seen the Season 8 finale of "Doctor Who" that aired since November, then you are too late. The character Missy was revealed to be the Master, the Doctor's dreaded nemesis.

After the realization of having a gender-swapping Time Lord, the producers and others are now open to the idea of having a female Time Lord. The idea has been accepted by most, but there is a mixed bag of Whovians on social media who are either for or against the idea of a female Gallifreyan.

After Season 8 drew to a close in November, and with the lowest ratings the "Doctor Who" series has ever seen, the producers and even the current Twelfth Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi, are open, and even saying yes, to the idea. But a female Time Lord is not anything new; the idea has been thrown around by another Time Lord.

Capaldi sounds off about a female Time Lord. In the two-part season finale, Missy, played by Michelle Gomez, is revealed to be the Master. The Doctor does not seem to realize that his old enemy is now a woman -- he sort of expects that it was just another regeneration, the International Business Times (IBT) reported.

While having another female Time Lord was explored on TV, the current Doctor has regenerated into male arguably 12 times. Capaldi is the Twelfth Doctor. But Capaldi is receptive to having a regeneration that could turn the character into a woman.

"I think next time might be a female Doctor. I don't see why not," Capaldi said. "I think it's good to do that," IBT reported.

Capaldi, 56, says that having a female Master opens the story to "all kinds of interesting stuff."

"They [the Doctor and the Master] have a total love/hate relationship anyway but they were both men for a long time, and still have that love-hate relationship, and we will see more of that probably," Capaldi said. "It's interesting, being able to swap like that. I think it's good," IBT reported.

When the idea was first thrown around a few years ago, a number of actors were open to playing the Doctor. Even Helen Mirren had sort of joked of wanting to play a "Time Lady."

"I think it's absolutely time for a female Doctor Who," Mirren said. "I'm so sick of that man with his girl sidekick. I could name at least 10 wonderful British actresses who would absolutely kill in that role," Screen Rant reported at the time. Mirren also went to say that the chances of her playing the Doctor were low.

Now Steven Moffat, the "Doctor Who" show runner has changed his tune. Speaking in an interview, Moffat was very keen on having a female Time Lord.

"No-one says you can't [have a female Doctor]. It's actually only since I took over the show that we have said it's actually possible within the logic of the show," Moffat said, USA Today reported. Moffat added that the very first lines that he wrote were of Matt Smith checking to see if he was a "girl."

Moffat also alluded to the fact that the female Time Lord has been brought up in episodes such as "The Doctor's Wife" and in "Night of the Doctor," USA Today reported. And now, obviously, with the female Master.

The idea of a female version of the Doctor was mentioned in the 1980s by another Time Lord. Tom Baker, who played the Fourth Doctor, had thrown the idea to fans, but it was never received, IBT reported.
