Spanish-language TV heavyweight Telemundo is reaching out to disadvantaged youth in Los Angeles, Calif. in the hopes of inspiring the next generation of TV broadcasters.

Telemundo has launched an education initiative, "El Poder de Saber" (The Power of Knowing) with youth development agency Woodcraft Rangers, offering after-school television production courses for students in disadvantaged neighborhoods in the L.A. area.

"This is a great opportunity for Telemundo Media to further develop its relationship with the communities it serves, give a diverse group of students a look into a fascinating industry, and kick start the careers of the next generation of broadcasters," said EVP, Chief Diversity Officer at NBCUniversal Craig Robinson.

"El Poder de Saber," which is part of Telemundo's ongoing commitment to promoting the educational advancement of Hispanics, will also offer young adults the chance to appear in a new series from Telemundo's multiplatform FLUENCY studios.

Hispanic youth in L.A. will have the opportunity to see if they shine in front of or behind the camera lens.

Workshops will touch upon everything from acting to camera operation and will be tasked with shooting their own version of a script for "ISA," an upcoming sci-fi mystery produced by FLUENCY studio. As an additional incentive, the students will get to appear as extras in the high school scenes within the for-broadcast version of "ISA."

Which high schools in the L.A. area will be participating in "El Poder de Saber?"

The classes will be accessible to students at Manual Arts, South East and West Adams High Schools, and will run from September to November 2013.

Telemundo Media is the largest producer of Spanish-language prime time content in the U.S. and for audiences around the world. Woodcraft Rangers is a youth development agency specializing in peer mentoring, expanded learning, and enrichment programs.
