Jencarlos Canela is going to make history on Dec. 31 as he Miami-born Cuban will be pushing the button to activate the Times Square New Year countdown.

Canela spoke to People En Español about what he has planned.

"I want to open in Spanish because I'm there as a Latino, even though I was born in the United States, I am proudly Latino," he said. "I am going to start with a song called 'Enjoy.' I did a version where you can feel the Caribbean folklore and the Latin rhythm fusing with American sounds."

The singer is very excited to be the first Latino to have this honor and wants to use it as a way to honor other Latinos.

"When I'm up there pressing that button I will do it in the name of the millions of Latinos who are here in the United States fighting," he told People En Español. "I will do it thinking of the community I represent."

He continued by saying that he believes his performance is about unity and asking for equality and that he has a message that he will share in the middle of the show. Canela is then going to sing "Give It Up Tonight," which is a remake of the 1970s song, He worked with Psy on the song.

The star won't be changing up his New Year's Eve plans too much. Canela's parents, cousins, aunts, uncles, brothers and son will be joining him in New York.

Canela added hat 2014 has been a successful year for him. He released an album, was a team captain of "Va Por Ti" and landed the Times Square gig.

"What I am living is truly a dream," he said. "Every time I prove that doing what you love is happiness."

In 2015, he will kick off his tour in Madrid on Jan. 31, 2015, and he will then go to the United States, which will be the first time he tours in his native country.
