New York Knicks coach Derek Fisher said Carmelo Anthony could eventually decide to sit out the remainder of the 2014-15 NBA season due to a knee injury.

Anthony, who has been experiencing knee soreness since their second game of the season, previously said people close to him are suggesting he should shut it down for the rest of the season to avoid aggravating the injury.

When asked about the possibility of playing without Anthony for the remainder of the season, Fisher admitted it could happen at some point, especially if their superstar's condition will not improve.

"From the conversations I've been a part of, I think everybody is smart enough to realize, calendar wise, timing wise, that there may come a point that that's the decision that needs to be made," Fisher said via ESPN New York. "But we realize that we can't force Carmelo to that point just yet."

The Knicks are currently in 14th place in the Eastern Conference standings with their 5-30 record -- just slightly ahead of the Philadelphia 76ers, who owns the worst record in the league at 4-27.

Their playoff chances are dim at this point, which might push them to let Anthony rest his ailing knee for good. Fisher said the decision will be made based on collective input from Anthony and their team staff.

"I think our medical staff, our training staff, continue to have conversations with him about where he is," Fisher said. "He's conversing with us about how he's feeling, what the symptoms are. And so as each day kind of unfolds, decisions are being made."

Anthony, who is averaging 23.9 points to go along with 6.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game this season, sat out in their 97-81 loss to the Detroit Pistons on Friday night.

The 30-year-old superstar said dealing with his ailing knee has been tough. The medical staff told Anthony the injury will not get any worse if he continues to play, but it will not improve either.

"It's tough. Some days you're able to do some things; some days you're not," Anthony said. "Some days it's tough to even run around and cut and jump. And then other days I come in and I don't really feel it."
