At the Television Critics Association press tour on Monday, Jan. 12, a day after the show's Season 5 premiere, Showtime announced that "Shameless" has been renewed for a sixth season of 12 episodes.

A remake based on the award-winning British series of the same name, the comedy-drama "Shameless" follows the dysfunctional working-class family of Frank Gallagher, an absentee single father of six childrenin Chicago's Canaryville on the South Side.

Production on Season 6 will commence towards the end of the year and is slated to return in early 2016, HitFix reports.

"The viewer loyalty and critical acclaim over the last five seasons has made 'Shameless' one of our signature series," Showtime Entertainment President David Nevins said in a statement. "This incredible collection of writers and actors have created a show truly unique in the television landscape."

Critics believe that show runners are gaining momentum from last season, which was arguably the series' best season. While the show had no ratings to report (perhaps because it aired the same night the 72nd Golden Globe Awards had its live broadcast and faced tough competition with the season premieres from rival network HBO's "Looking" and "Girls") Shameless" was talked about by media and fans alike on Sunday. William H. Macy, however, lost his run for for his fourth Golden Globe; instead "Transparent star Jeffrey Tambor won the award for Best Performance in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy.

Showtime also made other announcements.

"Happyish," starring Steve Coogan, has been ordered to series. Plans for a full season of the Showtime series were put on hold following his death of Academy Award-winner Philip Seymour Hoffman, who filmed a pilot episode before the was role was later passed on to Coogan. "Happyish" will air on April 26, alongside Season 7 of "Nurse Jackie" and Season 2 of "Penny Dreadful."

Last October, it was confirmed that serial drama "Twin Peaks" would return for a nine-episode limited series to air in early 2016 on Showtime, though it may move up depending on fan reactions. No dates have been set, however, fans should be delighted to know that Kyle MacLachlan will reprise his role as dapper FBI agent Dale Cooper, CNET reports.

If that doesn't float your boat, hip-hop aficionados or basketball buffs may enjoy this interesting news: Rapper Machine Gun Kelly will co-star in Cameron Crowe's "Roadies" pilot, and b-ball icon Kobe Bryant's documentary "Kobe Bryant's Muse" will premiere on February 21.

There was no news, however, on "House of Lies," which also aired on Sunday, though the show continues to draw viewership and accolades. In 2012, the show's lead actor Don Cheadle took home Golden Globe for Best Actor TV Series - Comedy or Musical, and was nominated again in 2013 and 2014.
