Fox surprised moviegoers with an unexpected teaser trailer of the much-discussed upcoming film, "The Fantastic Four."

Prior to the preview's release, no pictures or a detailed plot summary were released.

The trailer provided fans with the first glimpse into the superhero film and its much beloved characters.

The Four are played by young actors, Miles Teller as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Kate Mara as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm/The Thing, and Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch.

The hero's enemy is Victor Domashev, also known as Dr. Doom, played by Toby Kebbell.

The comic's origins were based on Cold War paranoia and had the foursome launching themselves into space and getting hit with cosmic radiation, altering their bodies.

This time around, the story has the four teleporting into an alternate universe.

Fox's brief summary of the story released in December says, "'The Fantastic Four', a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel's original and longest-running superhero team centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy. "

The trailer is ominously narrated and reveals a much darker film compared to the 2005 and 2007 campier adaptations starring Jessica Alba, Michael Chiklis, Chris Evans and Ioan Gruffudd.

Important scenes that have ignited excitement amongst fans and bloggers provided a peek into some of the character's transformations.

Bell's The Thing is shown in a quick scene bursting forward fully transformed into stone.

Viewers also caught a glimpse of Jordan's Johnny Storm becoming the Human Torch. The special effects are shown to be more realistic compared to the 2005 era Fantastic Four. Instead of attempting to make the star look as though he is made of fire like in previous films, he looks to be on fire.

A sequel to the movie is already planned for 2017, and there are rumors the Four may crossover with Fox's "X-Men" franchise.

The film is set for release in August.
