Apple Inc. has preserved its position as king of the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) market in the United States.

According to comScore, Apple secured first place among fellow OEMs for another consecutive three-month period. Apple maintained first place for the three months ending in September this year with 40.6 percent of the smartphone subscribers' market share.

The percentage for the Cupertino-based organization is an increase of 0.7 percentage points between the last three-month period and the three months ending in June earlier this year.

Samsung finished 15.7 percentage points behind Apple. For the South Korean-based organization, Samsung finished the three months ending in September with 24.9 percent of the smartphone subscriber's market share.

Samsung did manage to outdo Apple in terms of the most growth among smartphone subscribers. Samsung saw an increase of 1.2 percentage points compared to the three months ending in June this year.

HTC encountered the highest percentage loss among the OEMs comScore provided. HTC lost 1.4 percentage points between the three months ending in June this year to the same period ending in September.

Despite the market share percentage loss, HTC held onto third place with 7.1 percent by the time September concluded. Motorola also saw a loss in their total U.S. smartphone subscribers by 0.4 percentage points. Motorola finished with 6.8 percent of the market share during the three months ending in September, down from 7.2 percent.

LG rounded up comScore's top five OEMs. Unlike the aforementioned OEMs, LG did not see an increase or decrease in their market share. For LG, the OEM saw no percentage share changes. LG finished September with 6.6 percent.

According to comScore, 147.9 million people own a smartphone in the U.S., which accounted for 62 percent of the total mobile market penetration by the end of September. The percentage of U.S. smartphone owners increased by 4.5 percent compared to June's statistics by comScore.
