The Oxford Dictionaries have chosen its new word for the year 2013. I was hoping that it would be as exciting as when Oxford added "bootylicious" in 2004 to its dictionaries (defined as"of a woman who is sexually attractive"), and you know what, it kind of was. The new word that has been added to our trusty dictionaries is...drum roll...Selfie!

The Oxford definition of the word Selfie is "a photo one has taken of oneself, typically with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website". Ta-da...that's the definition of a selfie. We almost got stuck with the words bitcoin, binge-watch and the most terrifying of them all...twerk! But no, twerking didn't make it, sorry Miley, I know that Destiny's Child did it, but it just wasn't your time.

Judy Pearsall, Editorial Director for Oxford Dictionaries explains how the decision was made; "Using the Oxford Dictionaries language research programme, which collects 150 million words of current English in use each month, we can see a phenomenal upward trend in the use of selfie in 2013". Making selfie, the word of the year.

Oxford also reports that selfie was first used in Australia on a forum posting of a picture in 2002. Seems as if a "mate" was at another "mates" 21st birthday party, drunk, when he tripped and landed lip first on a set of steps, making a hole in his bottom lip. He then continued the caption saying "Sorry about the focus, it was a selfie". I'm sure this drunken Australian genius would have never imagined that his word was going to end up in the dictionary 11 years later.

The rising popularity on our 2013 forums of social networking finally allow us to use this term freely, and if we are ever corrected, we can gladly say, "it's a word, look it up". Facebook, Twitter and Instagram definitely made this word what it is today. And to think we simply had to take a picture of ourselves because there was no one around or we were to embarrassed to make "duck lips" in front of someone else. Cheers to those days when you are just feeling fabulous or when that outfit fits just right, cheers to taking the perfect...selfie.
