The Fashion Police talent Giuliana Rancic issued an on-air apology to Zendaya for making comments about her hair on the show Monday night, E! News reports.

Racic made a joke about the dreadlocks Zendaya wore for the Oscars red carpet, Yahoo! Celebrity reports.

"I feel that she smells like patchouli oil... or weed. Yeah, maybe weed," Rancic joked, upsetting people in the black community including Zendaya's father.

Kerry Washington, Chloe Grace Moretz and others spoke out in support of Zendaya, who was upset by the comments as well.

Kelly Osbourne, the only other original cast member of "Fashion Police," was also upset about the comment and said she does not condone racism and that the situation will be handled.

Rancic released the apology about an hour after making the dreadlocks joke.

"I want to address something that is weighing very heavily on my heart. I want to apologize for a comment that I made on last night's 'Fasion Police' about Zendaya's hair," she said.

"Now, as you know, Fashion Police is a show that pokes fun at celebrities in good spirit. But I do understand that something I said last night did cross the line," she continued.

"I just wanted everybody to know that I didn't intend to hurt anybody but I have learned that it is not my intent that matters, it's the result. And the result is that people are offended including Zendaya and that is not okay."

"Therefore, I want to say to Zendaya and anyone else out there that I have hurt that I am so sincerely sorry. This really has been a learning experience for me. I've learned a lot today."

"This incident has taught me to be a lot more aware of clichés and stereotypes, how much damage they can do. That I am responsible as we all are to not perpetuate them further," Rancic ended her apology.
