AMC will be giving a companion show to "Walking Dead" at least two seasons on the air, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The companion show is a prequel to "Walking Dead" set in Los Angeles during a zombie outbreak. The show, still untitled, will be a drama and focus on new characters and storylines, according to the AMC blog.

AMC will bring the show to the network alongside "Walking Dead." The pilot has been ordered, and AMC has already ordered a second season of the show. The first season of the show will feature six hour-long episodes.

The first season of the companion show will premiere in late summer on AMC, and the second season will premiere in 2016.

Cliff Curtis will star in the show as Sean Cabrera. His character is a teacher who shares a son with his ex-wife. Kim Dickens will be his co-star, playing Nancy, a guidance counselor who works with Sean and is romantically involved with him.

In the show, Nancy's daughter, Ashley, wants to leave Los Angeles and go to Berkeley when the apocalypse strikes.

The new companion show could give AMC a zombie show in each quarter of the year. "Walking Dead" airs the first half of its season in October and the second half in February. The companion show will be aired during the summer.

"We take incredibly seriously the notion of building a satisfying companion series to the No. 1 show on television. From the beginning of 'The Walking Dead' on AMC, we've been asked questions about what was going on in other parts of the zombie apocalypse, and what it looked like as the world really did 'turn.' Through this new series, we're going to find out," AMC president Charlier Collier said in making the announcement Monday.

AMC is assuming the new show will be successful.

"We feel empowered by this two-season commitment, a serious show of faith from our network partner AMC," co-writer of the pilot and executive producer Robert Kirkman said.

The show will air on AMC Global internationally 24 hours after it premieres in the U.S.
