During his E! special, After Shock, Spencer Pratt confirmed what most of us already knew: The Hills was not only scripted, all of his subsequent publicity stunts were only done for increased ratings and exposure.

The only thing that was real, according to his interview, was that he packed on 50 lbs. after The Hills ended, because he was literally "eating his emotions." Pratt said that he began to feel depressed after he was deemed "unemployable" and his publicity stunts -- done with the cooperation of his wife and former Hills co-star, Heidi Montag -- backfired. Everything else, however, was "a lie."

Pratt admits the following:

  • The couple's recent claims of "filing for bankruptcy" were just a ploy to get more headlines and exposure (it, of course, didn't work);
  • The couple is actually quite comfortable -- they live in Spencer's parents' $5 million Santa Barbara mansion (rent free), earned $500,000 for three weeks worth of work on "Celebrity Big Brother," and still get the occasional hosting gig in Vegas;
  • The couple didn't blow their earnings on anticipating the Mayan apocalypse, but they do regret spending $2 million on Heidi's failed music career and $1 million on clothes and shoes;
  • Despite their antics for fame, the couple is not only very happily married and stable, but Spencer put his education first, having completed his college degree after 10 years;
  • Even though most of the scripted stuff made it into the show, there were some things that the couple refused to do. For example, during the filming of the couple's spin-off show, the producers tried to work a story line where Spencer left Heidi at the altar. The couple adamantly refused to go along with the story line, despite being begged to do so for two hours;
  • He still gets heckled to this day about his behavior, and it's this heckling that's made him reluctant to start a family with his beloved wife. "I wouldn't want to be Spencer Pratt's kid," he said, concerned that his child would be a target for bullies. "I'd have a kid if there was no Google or YouTube."

"I don't think we've ever gotten to be the real Heidi and Spencer on TV," he concluded in the interview.
