A bomb threat at Harvard University has caused the campus to evacuate, and for final exams to be cancelled, on the campus of the prestigious Boston-based Ivy League school.

USA Today is reporting that the reports of the bomb threat, while as of this writing have gone "unconfirmed" by Harvard University police department spokesman Steven Catalano, arrived at approximately 9:00 a.m. Harvard issued the alert on its website, on Twitter and in emails citing "unconfirmed reports of explosives at four sites on campus: Science Center, Thayer, Sever, and Emerson. Please evacuate those buildings now."

The school tweeted that there had been no explosions. Faculty, staff and students were being updated through "Web, email and voicemail," the website said. Access to Harvard Yard, the historic center of campus, was being limited to residents with Harvard ID cards, the website said. "Out of an abundance of caution, the buildings have been evacuated while the report is investigated," the website statement said. "Harvard's focus is on the safety of our students, faculty and staff. We will update the media when we have more information."

According to The New York Daily News, when the Harvard Crimson -- the school's newspaper -- tweeted that the final exams were cancelled, the "students erupted in applause." Later, when the threat was determined to be a hoax, University officials announced that they will be issuing updates on rescheduled final exams later today. There was no clear motive, as of this writing, as to why the bomb threat was initially issued. However, since the final exams were cancelled as a result of this threat, it's suspected that this was the reason for the threat to be issued. In addition, no suspects have been identified as of this writing.
