The Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi saga continued this past week with both players getting chances to make statements in the Champions League and the Spanish League.

Ronaldo was first up to bat against Atletico Madrid in a game in which he was invisible for moments at a time. He did manage two shots on target and five overall, but few would claim that he did anything of note for Los Blancos in a game they looked destined to sweep away.

The next Messi got his day in Paris with Barcelona as the Catalan side rode to a 3-1 win that is likely to end the series before the second game even starts. Messi had an assist in the game and had a total of three shots over the course of the game; one hit the crossbar.

Then Barcelona got back to work on the weekend against Valencia, one of their tougher match-ups in the remaining Spanish League schedule. Messi scored his 400th goal for Blaugrana and helped his team to a 2-0 victory. He also had four shots overall and three key passes for Barcelona. He completed more than 90 percent of his passes.

So how does Ronaldo respond? He put up a tremendous performance against Malaga scoring a goal and creating two others for Sergio Ramos and James Rodriguez. He did, however, miss a penalty in the game, but he had seven shots (two on target) and three key passes in the game.

Season Stats

Ronaldo became the first player in history to score 50 goals in a season in five straight years. Messi scored 60 twice between 2011-13. Ronaldo also has 19 assists in all competitions, a career-high for him as well; he had 15 assists in two previous seasons (2013-14 and 2011-12).

Messi has 46 goals in all competitions but he has a whopping 24 assists over all competitions; his career-high is 28 in 2011-12.

In Spain, Ronaldo has 39 goals and 14 assists while Messi has 35 goals and 16 assists. He has scored nine of those goals from the penalty spot; of his 35 goals, Messi has scored four from the penalty spot, so he actually has more goals from open play than Ronaldo does in Spain.

Calendar Year Stats

Messi is still leading in this department, but his 23 goals in 24 games means that he is no longer on the goal-per-game pace that he was on at the start of the year. He does has 15 assists in that span, so in 2015, Messi has been involved directly in 38 Barcelona goals.

Ronaldo has 18 goals in 21 games, but has just seven assists in that span.

Streaking

Ronaldo's streak of four games with goals came to an end against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, but he has goals in six of the last eight games; he has 11 goals in that run. Since going through games without a goal in early February, he has 14 goals in the last 12 games.

Messi has slowed down from his early season pace and has just three goals in his last seven games. He does have four assists in that span, so he is involved with an average of one goal per game in that run.

Winner

It's a tough one to choose. Both players scored a goal on the weekend, while Ronaldo outmatched Messi with two assists.

However, Messi led his team to victories twice while Ronaldo was invisible in one crucial game.

So, for now, Messi retakes a 14-13 lead.
