There is no doubt that Season 2 of the hit TNT drama "The Last Ship" is gearing up to be an explosive start with a two-hour event on June 21 at 9 p.m.

According to io9, this hit drama series has gone in directions that might have first appeared as a bit cliché with plenty of nuanced storylines that included terrorists, Russian spies, South American drug lords and evil domestic conspiracies. But in the beginning of Season 1, those stories were not just a collection of old regurgitated themes, but a chance to really get them out of the way so we could be led up to what really threatens the post-apocalyptic world.

As can be seen through a teaser-trailer, the real enemies come in the form of "The Immunes." Those are the ones who survived the virus with no help from the medical science community and they are now the ones have taken in a sense of entitlement. That coming in the form of who has inherited the earth, through a "only the strong survive" type of philosophy.

They are also the ones who are hell-bent on destroying the cure and claiming the world as their own. They are, after all, the immune who survived a global killer and had been given the lands once the population died out. This in essence seems to have given them a new sense of nepotism for their own.

The struggle in Season 2 will now have two enemies with two different faces. The virus and the emerging political scene, which has taken authoritative steps to rid the world of its aggressors who oppose them.

In Season 1, the focus was not just on explosions and action, but the reasoning behind such actions and the science that supported it, io9 reports.

The ship's commander must now weigh all options for the good of humanity to protect those that can save them from the virus and stamp out political oppression by the emerging faction of immunes.

This upcoming summer season is poised to explode with some the best action television shows currently running. "The Last Ship" will be competing for audience share in the ratings with the likes of "Extant," "Falling Skies," "Under the Dome" and "Hannibal."
