Hollywood actor Idris Elba recently made headlines after he set a new British land speed record in a Bentley Continental GT.

The "Thor" actor crushed a 90-year-old "flying mile" speed record for Pendine Sands, Wales, when he averaged 180.4 miles per hour over the full mile and hit a top speed of 186.4 miles per hour, reported CNN. The Continental GT was a standard issue car, which comes with 626 horsepower, 12-cylinder engine and a top speed of 206 miles per hour.

Speaking on the experience and his entry into automotive history, Elba said, according to GQ Magazine, "It was an honour to have taken on the challenge, and to successfully follow in the footsteps of the illustrious Sir Malcolm Campbell."

Campbell, a motor racing journalist, set the land speed record in 1927 in a Napier-Campbell Blue Bird race car which locked in a 174.2 miles per hour reading.

With "The Wire" actor showing he knows his way around a steering wheel, MTV has tossed the idea that Elba would be a great addition to the confirmed "Furious 7" sequel. The record-breaking run, filmed for the Discover Channel's series "Idris Elba: No Limits," is said to be "compelling evidence" that Elba is suited to join the Vin Diesel-led franchise.

"Furious 8" Release Date & Plot

Last month, Diesel, 48, confirmed the eighth installment of the "Fast and the Furious" franchise. Variety reported that during the Universal Pictures' panel at the CinemaCon in Las Vegas, the actor announced that "Furious 8" will arrive in theaters in 2017.

"Furious 8 will be yours to share with the world on April 14, 2017," said Diesel who plays Dominic Toretto.

As he addressed the audience, the actor became emotional as he spoke about Walker and said "There is something you all did. For me, personally, you all gave me so much confidence. There was so much love. You made me feel like we could actually make history with 'Furious 7'. You've been so loyal all along."

While plot details have yet to be officially revealed, Diesel teased locations and new cast members during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! The EW shared a possible New York setting and confirmed the franchise newcomers Kurt Russell and Nathalie Emmanuel.

The movie will be the first film for the series that won't include actor Paul Walker, who died in November 2013 before "Furious 7" was able to complete filming. "Furious 7" was released on April 3 and took in more than $1 billion in ticket sales globally after 17 days from release.
