Sony representatives said in November that they expected to see 3 million PS4 units sold by years end.

Considering that the company sold more than 2 million in just the first two weeks of being on the shelves, the goal to sell 3 million has probably already been achieved. If, for whatever reason, Sony fell short, it couldn't have been by much at all.

However, the holiday season is wrapping up and we can expect to see the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 sales to level off a bit while still maintaining steady numbers for the foreseeable future.

Both Sony's PS4 and Microsoft's Xbox One sold one million units in the first 24 hours of sales. The Xbox One was launched a week after the PlayStation 4 in November, but both were released ahead of the Black Friday frenzy.

Microsoft's Xbox One really shouldn't be too far behind and the two could be close to a tie in sales. The company reported in mid-December that they had sold 2 million consoles after selling 1 million in the first night of sales. According to USA Today, the company said that, as of December, they were averaging more than 111,000 consoles sold per day since the opening day. This news came about a week after Sony's report about selling 2.1 million PS4 consoles.

The upcoming 2014 year will likely become a tipping point for the Xbox One to push sales or else risk losing sales to rival PS4. It all depends on how satisfied people end up being with one console or the other. If history is any indication, fans will stay loyal to one console or the other but the competition will remain high.
