“Jack Reacher 2” will reportedly be in the works pretty soon, with Ed Zwick of “The Last Samurai” directing it. Although an official title for the sequel is yet to be announced, Deadline reported that Zwick will be helming it, from a script written by himself and Marshall Herskovitz, rumors suggest.

According to Deadline, the storyline of the second movie of the “Jack Reacher” franchise will be obtained from Lee Child’s “Never Go Back” novel in 2013. The story is about a gruff former military police officer, played by Tom Cruise, who goes to Virginia to meet a woman named Susan Turner.

It may be the first time for Reacher and Turner to meet, but the meet-up prompts an interesting twist. As the film’s action arc, Reacher finds himself in a struggle to clear his name after he has been framed for a crime that he did not do.

Cinema Blend, meanwhile, was a bit surprised that film makers opted to go with the “Never Go Back” storyline. In the chronological fashion of “Jack Reacher” books, “Never Go Back” does not follow “One Shot,” which is the storyline that the first movie adapted. Although it may be true that Child’s novels could be regarded as single stories, “Never Go Back” actually builds on the actions of three previous stories in “A Wanted Man” and “61 Hours Worth Dying For.”

Cruise currently has other movies lined-up, and Zwick, is not the only director he'll work with again. The actor will be reuniting with “Edge of Tomorrow” director Doug Liman for “Mena.” It is assumed that “Jack Reacher 2” will start production once filming for “Mena” wraps up.

2012's first installment of the action franchise had gross earnings of $218 million, which are very good figures for a film that cost only $60 million to make.
