“UnREAL,” a new show on the Lifetime network, is expected to bring the concept of reality TV to the next level.

It is a highly intense drama that follows the on-screen show runners of a reality show that bears similarities to "The Bachelor," titled, “Everlasting.”

The show runners of “Everlasting” pull all strings in order to manipulate the show’s contestants, just to come up with a highly rated TV show that every demographic would want to watch.

“UnREAL” is part of Lifetime’s attempt to enter an edgier tone for their TV dramas, as Shiri Appleby, who plays the lead role of Rachel, explained to TV Line.

“They were very vocal to us that they are looking to redo the brand,” Appleby said. “This is the vehicle they are hoping will launch that campaign. We would get these scripts and think, ‘There is no way they are going to let us shoot this. This is insane!’ But, they are really going for it!”

Appleby’s character is actually the freelance producer of “Everlasting.” She may be one of the most significant show runners, but Rachel already has a pre-existing "shady history" with the show and its crew.

“Rachel struggles with her morals versus what she is doing for a living,” Appleby shared. “It is almost like manipulating people and taking them down is a high for her. When that high wears off, the guilt and remorse kick in.”

The show’s executive producer, Quinn, played by Constance Zimmer from “House of Cards,” keeps a watchful eye on her all the time, a character that Appleby has described as a “necessary evil.” Plus, she also has to work behind the camera with her ex-boyfriend.

Breeda Wool, who plays the role of Faith, a Christian contestant on “Everlasting,” has stated that “UnREAL” is pretty much like Lifetime’s own spin on “Breaking Bad.”

“Rachel is looking out for Faith,” Wool said. “But, at the same time, her main job is to make Faith crack and break and get drunk and humiliate herself. Each producer on ‘Everlasting’ gets more money when their girls succeed. So, it is this very interesting balance between wanting to utterly destroy someone and standing by them and supporting them.”

As Vulture reported, one of the creators of “UnREAL” is the former producer of “The Bachelor,” Sarah Gertrude Shapiro. She was the one who made the independent short film, titled, “Sequin Raze,” which is the source material for Lifetime’s upcoming show. The other one is Marti Noxon, who has produced popular TV shows like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Grey's Anatomy" and "Private Practice," among others.
