Amir Khan is being mentioned as the possible opponent to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in his next fight in September, but trainer Freddie Roach does not think his former fighter deserves a shot against the unbeaten champion.

Khan, who previously trained under Roach before splitting up following costly defeats, recently scored a unanimous decision win against Chris Algieri in their non-title fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

While Roach thinks Khan clearly won the fight against Algieri, the Hall of Fame trainer said that the performance was not enough to prove he deserves to face Mayweather, who will likely retire after his next fight.

"No, but I think he won the fight," Roach said when asked if he thinks Khan should land a bout against Mayweather after winning against Algieri. "He didn't do anything special, its tough choice."

Roach is also convinced Mayweather will not decide to face Khan because the reigning pound-for-pound wants another big paycheck and he knows facing the Briton will not appeal to boxing fans. The famed trainer also indicated that a fight between Khan and Mayweather will be a boring encounter.

"Does Mayweather want to take him because he thinks he's an easy fight?" Roach asked. "Khan does have fast hands. He throws combinations. He's a good athlete even though he holds a lot and is a little boring. I don't think Mayweather will go near him because no one wants to see that fight."

But while most boxing analysts and fans were convinced after the fight that Khan did not do enough to land his dream bout against Mayweather, the 28-year-old former world champion told Sky Sports he is closer than ever to getting a shot against the unbeaten welterweight and junior middleweight champion.

"I don't think I have ever been closer to getting the fight with Floyd Mayweather than I am at this moment," Khan said. "The indications are that I have strengthened my case with my win over Algieri and I believe there is every chance the fight could be confirmed within the next two weeks."

Khan was almost picked by Mayweather as his opponent for his May 2014 fight, but the Grand Rapids native eventually decided to face Marcos Maidana, who he defeated twice last year.

Earlier this year, Khan called out Mayweather again, but the 48-0 fighter opted to collide with Manny Pacquiao last month -- a fight that set boxing records in terms of revenue.
