“Star Trek 3” production is going to start in three weeks and director Justin Lin is admittedly excited to finally begin working on the internationally famous sci-fi franchise’s third film installment.

While he was at the TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood to mold his hands on floor cement alongside Zhao Wei and Huang Xiaoming, he was able to speak to Deadline and he shared how he grew up in a family that loved “Star Trek.”

Apparently, the Lin family, who owned a fish and chips restaurant in Anaheim outside of Disneyland, opted to eat their dinner very late so that they could watch the original “Star Trek” series every night, which, at the time, aired at 11 p.m.

“Every night, it was ‘Star Trek’ on Channel 13 in LA,” Lin said. “That was my childhood. The only time I could hang out with my parents was by staying late. I was the ‘Star Trek’ kid.”

Lin, who has directed four “Fast & the Furious” films, opted to leave that franchise in order to make way for “Star Trek.” As it would turn out, J.J. Abrams, who jumped ship in order to direct a “Star Wars” film, called him for the job late last year. “He asked me, ‘Do you like ‘Star Trek?’ If you do, you should take this. Be bold and just go for it.’”

Abrams’ take on the “Star Trek” franchise may have been impressive, but Lin is convinced that “there is still a lot to be mined from these characters.” After all, as depicted on the big screen, the team has not yet embarked on their five-year mission, which means that the storyline that was seen in the iconic TV show “hasn’t been touched on yet,” said Lin.

He may have also left some hints about the script that was written by Doug Jung and Simon Pegg, one that reportedly did not borrow any plot points from previous “Star Trek” episodes. “It is all new and fresh,” Lin revealed, adding, “The Klingons, Romulans, and other species are great. But, it is time to go further. It has been fun to focus on creating whole new worlds and species.”

Abrams’ film introduced a young Captain James T. Kirk who needed a lot of convincing before he joined the Starfleet, where he later met McCoy, Spock, Uhura, and the rest of those who were on the USS Enterprise. Picking up where Abrams left off somehow “sets up an opportunity for exploration.” “The deeper you go, the more you are examining humanity,” Lin continued.

"Star Trek 3" is set for release on July 8, 2016.
