The PS4 and Xbox One are selling like hotcakes, racking up 7.2 million in total combined sales since their launch. The PS4 has the edge in units sold by 1.2 million, but that is to be expected. It launched one week earlier and benefits from a 20 percent lower starting price when compared to the Xbox One. Whichever camp consumers decide to align themselves with, Sony or Microsoft, they can't really go wrong.

The PS4 is the de facto system for the hardcore gamer. When compared to the One, the PS4 offers up higher resolutions which translates to a more life-like gaming experience. It also has a much improved controller when compared to the DualShock 3. With an intuitive touchpad, refined force feedback and firm, yet clicky, buttons the DualShock 4 is a hit. The Xbox One's controller is really a slightly enhanced version of the good, not great, Xbox 360 gamepad. Gamers hold the controller for long stretches of time so comfort is a major consideration.

The entertainment junky is wise to throw its money at the Xbox One. The console features the ability to completely take over your cable or satellite TV boxes interface via HDMI (High Definition Media Interface) pass through. Another promising feature the Xbox One provides its users is crystal clear Skype chat. The Full HD wide-angle camera is built into the One's included Kinect sensor. People are no longer confined to sitting uncomfortably close to their laptop's or desktop's webcam in order to be seen and heard. The camera is so wide that is has the ability to pan, thus enabling multiple people to chat at once.

But at the heart of both these systems are graphics cards and processors that yearn to be pushed to the outer limits. The only way to truly test a system is to game on them. What titles can prospective buyers, and those who already own either system, look foward to? Arguably, the most anticipated Xbox One game is Respawn Entertainment's Titanfall. Pitting soldiers against mech warriors in a widely destructible, open world environment is music to gamers' ears. Titanfall will also be available for the PC and drop on March 11, 2014. The most widely anticipated game for the PS4 has to be Uncharted 4. Not much information is available about adventurer Nathan Drake's latest mission (argh!), but you can check out the teaser trailer here.

Since the (insane) holiday shopping season is over the PS4 and Xbox One systems should be easier to corral. Brick-and-mortar retail stores nationwide should carry a decent amount of each console though it's wise to call ahead or check online. If you're a Microsoft fan and do most of your shopping online, then you are in luck. Gamestop, Best Buy, Walmart, Target and Amazon all have the Xbox One currently in stock and ready to ship. The PS4 is sold out on all those online stores, but you can still purchase a console through select 3rd party sellers on Amazon Marketplace.
