Conservative commentator Ann Coulter criticized Republican Gov. Nikki Haley's decision to remove the Confederate flag from South Carolina's statehouse on Tuesday, calling her an immigrant who does not understand American history.

While speaking with Lisa "Kennedy" Montgomery on Fox Business Network, the controversial critic accused MSNBC of distorting the history behind the flag and its connection to Democrats, the Confederacy and African-Americans. She also emphasized that the flag is an important part of Southern history.

"The Confederate flag we're talking about never flew over an official Confederate building," Coulter said. "It was a battle flag. It is to honor Robert E. Lee. And anyone who knows the first thing about military history knows that there is no greater army that ever took the field than the Confederate Army."

According to Coulter, Dylann Roof's mass murder of nine African Americans in a church last week "had nothing to do with the Confederate flag," despite the fact that he touted it as a symbol of white supremacy. "He was also wearing a Gold's Gym T-shirt," noted Coulter.

Coulter then went on to blast Gov. Haley for calling for the Confederate battle flag to be taken down from outside the State Capitol.

"I really like to like Nikki Haley since she is a Republican. On the other hand, she is an immigrant and does not understand America's history," said Coulter.

In response, Kennedy questioned Coulter, asking, "Immigrants can't understand history?"

Coulter replied, saying, "Well, she doesn't!"

Haley was born in South Carolina to immigrant parents from India.

Following Coulter's racist remarks, the head of a top Indian-American advocacy group issued a statement condemned Coulter's comments.

"It's a demographic death march that the Republican Party is on. This is a country of immigrants," said Sanjay Puri, chairman and founder of the U.S.-India Political Action Committee on Wednesday, according to Politico.
