Hollywood superstar Leonard DiCaprio has teamed up with Academy Award-winning director Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu ("Birdman") on new survival thriller based on mythical frontiersman Hugh Glass.

The film, "The Revenant," has released its first trailer and it is spectacular, according to Entertainment Weekly.

DiCaprio plays Glass, who was at one point attacked by a bear in the wilderness and abandoned, or left for dead, by his fellow hunters on the escapade. This is where Glass must face extreme odds in the wilderness to escape the death-defying elements and natives.

Survival is the name of the game in this movie. The trailer clearly depicts Glass encountering harrowing danger at all turns and shows the extremes for which he must go to just to survive. He is forced to endure a 200-mile trek, a journey that is supposed to lead him back to civilization and redemption.

The fight to get across the treacherous land, which is set in the 1820s, is the will to survive and get himself to safety. He has the use of guns and ammunition, but not nearly enough to overtake the hoards of Native Americans or the wildlife.

The film was produced on location in the Canadian wilderness, which most closely depicts the elements Iñárritu wanted to portray in the film. The director also used only natural light for the film and optioned to use his Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki to achieve that goal.

The harrowing ordeal of filming alone was no easy task as well. It was shot in Calgary and the elements were quite a task to deal with, not to mention they ran out of snow near the end of the production.

The film is expected to be released on Christmas day and in order for them to reach their deadline they must finish production in Argentina for the remainder of the film.
