"Minecraft" movie is finally happening and the company behind the popular sandbox independent video game has found its director. Word is out that Mojang has zeroed in on "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" series actor, creator and director to helm the movie.

The Swedish video game developer made the announcement on its official website. Mojang posted a photo of Rob McElhenney in its statement.

"Hello there! Some of you may have seen this guy hanging around MINECON in London a couple of weeks ago. He's Rob McElhenney, and he's going to be directing the upcoming Minecraft movie," the company's press release read.

The director also posted an update on his Twitter handle that confirmed his role in the project.

"Hey @Mojang, let's do something strange and wonderful," posted the director on Tuesday.

McElhenney will work with Warner Bros. which has acquired the rights to develop the movie in February 2014, noted The Hollywood Reporter. The studio is hoping for another success within the gaming genre, much like what it reaped with "The LEGO Movie."

Jill Messick and Roy Lee will produce the film. Both were also the producers behind "The LEGO Movie."

Before the 38-year-old director was tied with the project, it was initially reported that Shawn Levy was supposed to helm the film. Michele Mulroney and Kieran Mulroney were slated to pen the screenplay that will go with Levy's work.

However, Levy did not push through with the project and the studio was left looking for a replacement since December last year. Both writers also left with the filmmaker.

According to The A.V. Club, the reason the "Night At The Museum" director left the project was due to "his proposal for ratcheting a plot onto the skeleton of the narrative-free game was rejected."

No new screenwriters have been announced for the upcoming movie and it remains to be seen if McElhenney will also double as the writer for the film.

Aside from some episodes of "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia," the 38-year-old sitcom actor also directed a TV movie called "Pariah" as well as "Danny DeVito & the Contract," stated Eurogamer.

"Minecraft" will be the second feature film under his directorial belt. McElhenney also helmed the film, "Figments," a Legendary Pictures movie about a kid whose imagination goes wild and leads him into disastrous results.

No date has been announced when the movie will hit theaters but more news and updates are expected to come out soon.
