Director Justin Lin is upgrading the "Star Trek" franchise with a new look. Fresh footage taken from the set reveal new uniforms for the USS Enterprise crew and an exciting alien character Trekkies have never seen before.

Much of the details of the upcoming "Star Trek Beyond" film have mostly been kept under wraps, but photos from Screen Crush allow fans a peek of what's in store.

The images show cast and crew shooting an outdoor scene with Chris Pine as Kirk, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Anton Yelchin as Chekov and newcomer Sofia Boutella, whose character still remains largely unknown.

While Pegg's character keeps his red uniform, it's noticeable that both Pine and Yelchin have donned new jackets and uniforms for the new "Star Trek Beyond".

Boutella's character is part of the scene and seems to be an ally of the crew in the footage released. Her appearance -- long white hair, chalk white skin and black markings across her face -- is unlike any alien species the audience have seen in previous movies, so her look is one of the new things to be looked forward to in the upcoming sequel.

The up-and-coming actress, who stole the screen in her sassy and deadly character in "The Kingsman" is reportedly playing a lead character in "Star Trek Beyond", according to Deadline. Her major role points to a fresh "Star Trek" story for this new film.

"They haven't really gone on their five-year mission, so what we experienced in the TV show hasn't been touched on yet," Lin explained in an interview with Deadline last June. "That sets up an opportunity for exploration and the deeper you go, the more you are examining humanity."

Although very little has been revealed, it's clear that Lin is not afraid to venture into new frontiers, much in the spirit of the franchise. In the interview, he assured that the team wouldn't be rehashing the old plots saying, "It's all new and fresh. The Klingons, Romulans and other species are great, but it's time to go further. It has been fun to focus on creating whole new worlds and species."

Joining Pine, Pegg, Yelchin and Boutella in the much-awaited movie are Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho and Deep Roy, plus other new franchise faces Idris Elba, Joe Taslim and Lydia Wilson. Production for the film began earlier this summer in Vancouver, according to SciFi Pulse.

"Star Trek Beyond" hits theaters on July 8, 2016.
