After a seeming ceasefire in the Ukrainian protests, today was the worst day as violence between protesters and police have left over a hundred injured and reportedly to be 14 dead at latest count including six policemen.

Armoured personnel carriers are moving towards Kiev's Independence Square and have come under fire from protestors throwing homemade molotov cocktails to defend their bases and prevent the government forces from advancing reported Reuters earlier today. A civil activist in Kiev, has tweeted that protestors have set one of the Ukrainian police armoured personnel carriers on fire. Many commentators on the ground expect the government to begin a full-on assault of protester headquarters later tonight.

@laurnorman posted on Twitter today that "Top #EU aide says @BarrosoEU, #Merkel and #Biden all called Yanukovych today but 'could not reach him.' #Ukraine" and it is completely unclear what the government's motive is now because they seemed to offer an olive branch earlier to protestors, although now it might have been a show of weakness to draw them into complacency. The people of Ukraine believe very strongly in moving towards the European Union while the government is not willing to break any ties with Russia.

The New York Times reported that "Protesters reported that the police were using live ammunition, but this could not be confirmed. Cartridges scattered on the street suggested that most, if not all, of the firing from police lines involved rubber bullets. Some demonstrators carried firearms, too, though it was unclear whether they had used them. On Instyuts'ka Street, a crowd pulled a man from a parked car after discovering a rifle in the car's trunk."

Ukrainian police stormed the camp "Maidan," also known as the headquarters of the protest movement, where civilians had set up barricades in the center of the city. The Maidan headquarters was made famous as the place where one protester, in armor and balaclava proposed to his girlfriend then made an impassioned speech to his countrymen in a video that went viral on Youtube.
