Fans of Bungie's share-world shooter game "Destiny" is only days away from welcoming the game's third expansion pack. However, they must first get used to the changes Patch 2.0 will bring on Sept. 8 before "The Taken King" officially arrives on Sept. 15.

According to Bungie's official website, update 2.0 will introduce the "Mercy Rule." As its name suggests, the feature will recognize laughter matches and will call them off quickly. Senior game designer of "Destiny" Andrew Weldon said that the new rule would prevent any "exceptionally unpleasant results" in the game moving forward.

Referring to a sample of score deltas in games of Control, Weldon observed the following:

"Somewhere in the neighborhood of 63% of Control games finish with a score delta of < 6k points. Somewhere around half of those end with deltas of < 3k points. These are healthy and generally competitive matches. And look at those 10% of games with a score difference of less than 1000 points! Those are thrilling, down-to-the-wire games. These are the kinds of games we want you to experience in the Crucible."

How can the "Mercy Rule" promote such ideals? Firstly, it will be able to detect bad matches and terminate them as soon as possible. Second, it will cut down the number of players who are spawned into bad matches. Lastly, it will incentivize players with full end-of-match rewards to prevent match quitting. Players, who are facing superior foes and have dismal chances of clawing back into the match, will have to persevere for a little while or else they forfeit the incentives.

"When the Mercy Rule hits, Shaxx will call out the end of the match. We immediately disable join in progress to prevent any additional players from joining the game (if anyone has dropped already) and reset the game clock to 10 seconds. After those 10 seconds, the match will end normally. All players will receive their end of match rewards and return to matchmaking," Weldon explained.

The new rule seeks to "improve the quality of life for players caught on the receiving end of a massive blowout." However, match winners who end the game early will be rewarded with the "No Mercy" gold metal, well-suited for bragging rights purposes.

"Destiny" players only have a week to sulk up the remaining days of Year One. Once Year Two begins on Sept. 8; quests will be a lot more different to complete. An experience-based leveling system will replace the light-based leveling, and a new quest menu system will be introduced.
