Smartphone and tablet users of Sony's older Xperia Z models will be glad to know that the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop is now well within their reach.

A fresh report from Xperia Blog confirmed that the latest Android OS update is now available for some older Xperia Z units, and more are to be revealed in the upcoming days.

"The older Sony Xperia Z series is now seeing the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop firmware start to seed in the form of build number 10.7.A.0.222. At the time of writing, we have noticed the update land on the Xperia Z (C6602, C6603 variants), Xperia ZL (C6503, C6506 variants), Xperia ZR (C5503 only) and Xperia Tablet Z Wi-Fi (SGP311, SGP312) and Xperia Tablet Z LTE models (SGP321 only)." Xperia Blog reported.

It is interesting to note though that rolling out OS updates as well as making them backwards-compatible for older units takes some time to fully complete. Even though the new patch carries much-needed fix to Android 5.0 bugs and performance issues, owners of other past Xperia models like the Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z1 Compact will just have to be patient.

As a consolation, the longer patches seed to a particular unit means developers aren't working with haste nor compromising the quality of the fix just to meet a certain software production deadline.
