The Seattle Seahawks open their season this weekend against the St. Louis Rams. Pete Carroll's squad is ready to make a third consecutive Super Bowl run, but it doesn't look like they're going to have Kam Chancellor for Week 1.

Chancellor wants a new contract and the Seahawks aren't budging. Should the Seahawks restructure Chancellor's contract or stay with what they agreed to? Let's weigh all the options.

Stay Firm

It doesn't look like the Seahawks are going to give Chancellor what he wants this time. Who could blame them? They just gave Chancellor a new contract not that long ago, which he agreed to. Chancellor still has three years remaining on that deal and he is scheduled to make more than $16 million in base salary. The Seahawks can't keep redoing contracts with players every year because it sends a bad message.

The most obvious reason the Seahawks can't give in is because of the strict salary cap rules imposed by the NFL. Russell Wilson, Bobby Wagner, Marshawn lynch and Richard Sherman all recently got new contracts. The Seahawks can't just spend whatever they want because it will result in the loss of quality players. Byron Maxwell left the Seahawks this offseason because the team couldn't afford to keep him. If the Seahawks pay Chancellor top dollar, that could result in offensive line issues. More than likely Chancellor will cave in and return to the team just like most players do in the end.

Restructure

Owners and general managers hate to spend a lot of money on players, but sometimes you just don't have a choice. Chancellor is viewed as the best strong safety in the league for a reason. Chancellor is like a linebacker playing in the secondary with great zone reading skills. This is a player you don't want to lose.

As previously stated, the Seahawks no longer have Maxwell so the "Legion of Boom" will look significantly different. Could you imagine the Seahawks without Chancellor? Sherman is definitely the best cover player for the Seahawks, but Chancellor is the one who really sets the tone and fear into opposing wide receivers. In the end, you get what you pay for, and Chancellor is the best at what he does.

Trade?

The Seahawks phone has been ringing constantly with teams interested in trading for the 27-year-old safety. According to league reports, many NFL teams, such as the New York Giants, are interested in adding Chancellor to their roster. The Seahawks could get huge value in exchange for Chancellor. Draft picks, players, cash, you name it. As good as Chancellor is, he was a fifth round draft pick, and the Seahawks know how to draft talented players. If Chancellor doesn't want to play, it could be a good idea for the Seahawks to get value while they still can instead of having an unhappy player take up a roster spot without even playing.
