Next season is going to be the biggest yet on "The Walking Dead."

Executive producer Greg Nicotero sat down with AMC.com and gave them a few details about what to expect for Season 6 of the immensely popular horror-themed show, which is currently the highest rated show on cable television.

One thing that fans of the show have come to expect is that each season, the zombies (Walkers) have gotten more and more grotesque. That is because they are starting to rot and their bodies are succumbing to the elements. But how will that affect the truly horrifying nature of the monsters?

Nicotero outlined his production process and talked about the challenges their makeup department faced for Season 6, which is only a year and a half into the zombie apocalypse according to his "TWD" timeline.

"One thing that's very important on the show is to keep the anatomy real," Nicotero told AMC. "Scott [Gimple] and I had conversations about, for example, exposed bones. Musculature would need to exist for the walkers to move around and we keep that authentic and realistic."

Having those anatomical components on the zombie's bodies is obviously crucial if they are to maintain the apocalypse. But how long can it last? That is a basic lesson in survival for season 6 as the herds increase. Once they start biting or killing off living people, then the process of fresh zombie decay starts all over again.

"We completely redefined our makeup process this year. I think we have already exceeded the total number of walkers all of last year just in the first three episodes [of Season 6]," Nicotero said.

Fans can also expect there to be the same authenticity in Season 6 that has been so inherent to the show to start with. The reality of their situation is that some people had to fight off zombies with things like machetes or knives. If their weapons did not stop them, then they were killed and, theoretically, the weapons would still be lodged inside the zombie. Nicotero said fans can also expect to see the monsters walking around with machetes and other blunt instruments lodged in their bodies.

Season 6 of "The Walking Dead" is set to premiere on AMC on Oct. 11 and will be an extended 90-minute episode.
