The upcoming Academy awards are all the buzz this week as the day of reckoning is fast approaching. But with all the buzz on who could bring home what award, is there any way for social networking to predict the results of the Oscars accurately?

According to Forbes, there are a lot of information in social media and specific companies mine such information to show what the trends are. In the case of the 86th annual Academy Awards, Farsite Forecast believes it can actually predict the results of the Oscars.

T analytics division of technology company ICC, Farsite looks at a number of different factors including the buzz and popularity coupled with previous award wins and prior performance to determine the probably winners.

In last year's Oscar prediction, the company garnered a 5/6 batting average on the biggest categories. The only category it was stumped on was the category for Best Director where Life of Pi's Ang Lee beat out presumed winner Steven Spielberg.

Based on this year's nominees, Farsite's scientifically determined bets include:

  • Best Picture: 12 Years A Slave
  • Best Director: Alfonso Cuaron
  • Best Actor: Matthew McConaughey
  • Best Actress: Cate Blanchett
  • Best Supporting Actress: Lupita Nyong'o
  • Best Supporting Actor: Jared Leto

It's notable to mention that the predictions of Farsite are parallel to those of Entertainment Weekly which only differs in the Best Picture category. The same is also true for the prediction of HuffingtonPost's Entertainment Oscar predictions as well as the predictions of Yahoo! movie experts in the six major categories where all six categories were a match with Farsite.

Forbes recognizes that while the predictions are close, it's nearly impossible to have a 100% accurate prediction because of the fact that the voters are a narrow group that may or may not reflect the view of the nation as a whole. There may actually be enough rogue voters that could alter the outcome of the awards.

Fact of the matter is, watching these award shows are always more enjoyable when there are surprises.
