The official launch of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus might be delayed for some customers due to Pope Francis' historic visit to the U.S.

According to CNET, New Yorkers who preordered the new iPhones, in hopes of receiving them Friday, might have to wait an extra day. Apple says that heavy traffic in the New York area could prevent delivery partners from delivering the phones on Friday.

The pope is expected to arrive in New York on Thursday. Large crowds, increased security and large volumes of traffic could cause delivery companies like UPS and FedEx to delay their deliveries of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.

Apple is promising customers that if they do not receive their new phones on Friday, the company will offer Saturday delivery for most locations. Apple is advising customers to track their phones' locations through UPS and FedEx's websites to see the latest details on package statuses.

UPS also issued a separate warning regarding the iPhone, saying that residents in New York, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. could all see delays because of the Pope's visit. UPS said in the statement that deliveries in the D.C. area should be running as normal by Friday morning. The Pope is visiting all three cities this week.

Usually, preordering the new iPhone is the best way to ensure receiving the phone on the first day it is launched. Customers can walk into Apple stores and pick up their phones without standing in long lines outside. Apple is already saying that preorders for the new iPhones are "very strong," and they expect to surpass last year's iPhone launch.

Apple is sending emails to customers in the New York area to inform them that their iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus could be delayed, according to The Verge.

Apple Stores will have supplies of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus for walk-in customers, but lines are expected to be very long at stores on Friday. Sales begin at 8 a.m. EDT.
