Maggie Gyllenhaal has been cast to co-star in the new TV series "The Deuce," alongside James Franco.

HBO has ordered the series, which is about the porn industry, and takes place around Times Square in the '70s and '80s.

Deadline reports that Gyllenhaal will play a character named Candy, a prostitute in the Times Square area. The series will follow her and a few other characters during this time of tawdry escapades, which led to the legalization of the porn industry and its quick rise to popularity.

The time period in midtown Manhattan was also when the rise of the HIV virus and subsequent epidemic started to take hold, and the industry started to see backlash right from the beginning. Of course, this was also during the rise of cocaine in the area, which also gets mixed in with the controversial industry.

The series hails from "The Wire" and "Treme" creator David Simon, who has received loads of critical and audience appraise for both of his previous shows. Simon is a mainstay at HBO, with both previous shows and this new one running exclusively on the premium cable network.

Simon's shows have always been known for the "true to life" feel, with plot elements which mirror events that really unfold in life.

Gyllenhaal and Franco are to headline the new show with what is poised to be a fantastic portrayal of the industry and time period, created by David Simon, a person who is known for his authentic storylines and settings. It sounds like a hit already.
