The countdown until Halloween 2015 is underway and participants can expect to see many "Minions" and "Star Wars" character costumes on Oct. 31, according to NRF's 2015 Halloween Consumer Top Costumes Survey conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics.

The "Minions" and "Star Wars" costumes ranked as the most popular of the 2015 Halloween costumes survey for all three categories consisting of adults, children and pets, NRF reports.

NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay revealed the reason behind these costumes' popularity.

He explained that the popularity of Halloween costumes stem from what is currently trending in "Hollywood and pop culture."

According to Shay, both entertainment realms "have a tremendous impact on how adults and their children decide to dress the part each Halloween, and it's evident some of the biggest newsmakers of the year will be out in full force this fall."

And while "Minions" and "Star Wars" costumes ranked as the most popular of all three consumer categories, princess costumes trumped as the top children's costume for the 11th consecutive year.

The NRF survey claims that approximately 3.2 million children will be dressed as princesses this year and another 2 million will dress more specifically as their favorite "Frozen" character.

Princess costumes have become a staple Halloween costume over the years because "children love the idea of fairy tales, which they learn about at a very young age," Kathy Grannis Allen, senior director of media relations at the National Retail Federation, told Yahoo Parenting. "This could contribute to princess costumes topping the list for so many years."

Additionally, over 1.8 million will sport a "Star Wars" costume while 1 million will opt to wear a "Minion" outfit.

The top adult costume that has also been popular for 11 years in a row is the traditional witch costume. Over 4.3 million adults will be witches for Halloween while 1.4 million adults will wear costumes of their favorite "Star Wars" character.

In addition to the NRF survey, BuzzFeed has compiled a list of top Halloween makeup trends and costumes that have become popular this year.

The viral dress that became popular on social media earlier this year for its ability to seemingly change color is available as a Halloween costume on yandy.com, according to BuzzFeed. The dress costume retails at $46.95.

Cosmopolitan describes Yandy's "The Dress" costume as a "sexy take" on the social media phenomenon that had users debating over there the outfit was white and gold or blue and black.
