Microsoft announced two new premium smartphones Tuesday, the Lumia 950 and the Lumia 950 XL. When they are released in November, they will only be available from AT&T in the U.S.

A Microsoft executive was interviewed about the availability of the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL, CNET reports.

"It's the best distribution for this family of devices," said Tuula Rytila, corporate vice president of marketing for phones and new devices.

AT&T had a strong relationship with Nokia, who formerly made the Lumia smartphones before Microsoft bought them out last year. AT&T will continue this relationship with the Microsoft Lumia smartphones.

Customers who are subscribers to other wireless carriers like Verizon or T-Mobile will not be able to purchase the Microsoft Lumia 950 or Lumia 950 XL. Microsoft thinks it will get a better promotional strategy by only providing the new phones to one carrier.

AT&T has already confirmed it will be carrying the Lumia 950, but did not confirm the Lumia 950 XL. In Europe, Rytila says the Lumia phones would be widely available to customers.

Smartphone companies use the single carrier strategy when they want marketing support and more shelf room at stores for their devices. Apple originally made its iPhone devices only available through AT&T, but then ended that agreement and pushed the phones out to the three other major carriers. Samsung and LG want their devices available to as many carriers as well.

AT&T recently released the Amazon Fire Phone and HTC First as exclusive phones, but were both highly unsuccessful.

Microsoft wants the Lumia to be successful, but only three percent of smartphone users choose Windows phones over the much more popular iOS and Android smartphones.
