Sony announced March 3 that it had officially sold more than six million PlayStation 4s after the successful release of its console in Japan a few weeks before.

John Koller, Sony Computer Entertainment America marketing vice president, announced Sony's milestone victory in the recent next-gen console wars, which began late November, in the company's PlayStation blog.

"It's truly humbling to see the rate at which gamers across the globe are choosing PS4 as their next gen console of choice," Koller said. "Even more exciting is what happens when gamers power up their PS4s ... enabling gamers to connect, compete and share their greatness with friends and fellow gamers."

According to Extreme Tech, Sony also reported that 13.7 million games have been sold for PS4, which is an attach rate of 2.3 gamers per console. The most popular game so far has been Killzone: Shadow Fall with 2.1 million copies sold so far.

As of January, Complex reported, Microsoft had sold 3.9 million Xbox Ones globally.

Xbox Corporate Vice President Yusef Mehdi said in a press conference, "Over 3 million Xbox One consoles were sold to consumers in 13 countries before the end of 2013. It's been incredible to see Xbox One selling at a record-setting pace for Xbox, and we were honored to see Xbox One become the fastest-selling console in the U.S. during our launch month in November."

However, according to Gamespot, by Dec. 28 the PS4 was already the dominant console as Sony had sold more than 4.2 million units.

Sony reported that it has sold 370,000 units during the first week of sales in Japan last month, while the company sold 1 million consoles in the first 24 hours in the U.S.

Koller also said that 90 percent of PS4s in the U.S. are online and with the use of the console there have been more than 3.6 million live broadcasts, and more than 56 million spectate sessions through Twitch and Ustream.

"We love the enthusiasm that all of you have had for the PS4 since launch," Koller said, adding, "and we can't wait to share more great games, experiences and features with you soon."
