Baristas at Starbucks could see some extra money soon after the coffee giant introduced a mobile tipping system that works from an iPhone app.

Tipping at Starbucks has been done in cash but there are many people who just carry a card around rather than cash, so this adds to the convenience. Baristas at more than 7,000 Starbucks locations will have more opportunities to make a little extra money after this goes into effect.

The new app is expected to be released on March 19 and almost 10 million people already use the company's app. According to The Los Angeles Times, more than 11 percent of the transactions that take place at Starbucks each week are completed on a mobile device.

"As more and more customers are using their phone to pay, they have also asked for a convenient and meaningful way to show their appreciation to store partners," Cliff Burrows, group president, U.S., Americas and Teavana, mentioned in a statement. "We're proud to offer digital tipping as an option through the updated Starbucks for iPhone app for customers in the U.S."

Among other changes for the app include a revamped design to keep things fresh and as well as another special pay feature in which Starbucks customers can simply shake their phone while at the coffee shop and then the card's barcode will appear.

Clearly Starbucks made paying convenience a priority when it came to the app update. Only time will tell whether this will actually make much of a difference, but it is the general trend nonetheless.
