Indianapolis Colts fans woke up to some awkward and disappointing news on Monday morning.

The owner of the team, Jim Irsay, was arrested and charged with four felonies for driving under the influence and possessing a controlled substance, according to the authorities.

The popular sports owner was driving his car slowly before stopping in the middle of the road. He also never used a turning signal when he committed to a turn, according to Lt. Joe Bickel at the Carmel Police Department.

Clearly, police became suspicious of this activity on the road and it grabbed their attention, but that wasn't all. Irsay further proved that he was not fit to drive that evening when cops asked him to complete some tests.

"During the course of the investigation, Irsay subsequently failed several roadside field sobriety tests," Bickel said in a release.

According to NBC Sports, Irsay's arrest marks the first time that an owner has been arrested since Internet has been around. Thus, teams are not exactly well-versed on how to handle something of this nature but the team released a statement as soon as possible.

"We are gathering information at this time regarding last night's incident involving Jim Irsay," the statement said. "The team will issue additional statements when the facts are sorted and we are aware of the next steps to this process. Many fans have reached out to express their concern and we appreciate their support."

Irsay is one of the more popular owners in sports, partly due to his presence on social media. Ironically, he recently mentioned on Twitter that he doesn't drink and that his last drink was 15 years ago. This will likely become the subject of much discussion in the coming days as the team and the league determine how to handle the situation.
