The Arizona Diamondbacks are looking to add pitching depth to their starting rotation in the offseason. There are a lot of potential targets in free agency, and AZ Central reports John Lackey is the perfect fit for the Diamondbacks.

The report pointed out that over the last three seasons since his Tommy John surgery in 2012, Lackey has averaged 202 innings pitched with a 3.35 ERA. His age is a concern as he just turned 37 last week, but it makes him a candidate for a low-risk, high reward short-term deal.

He can provide Arizona with dependability at the middle of the rotation and also give advice to young starters in the team like Archie Bradley, Patrick Corbin and Robbie Ray. The problem with Lackey is that he may be inclined to stay with the St. Louis Cardinals or sign with his home state teams, the Texas Rangers or Houston Astros.

According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, teams may offer Lackey a contract for three years, valued at $15 to $20 million per year. He noted that his recovery from the Tommy John surgery in 2013 and strong 2015 season have increased his value on the pitcher market. He posted a 2.77 ERA with a 13-10 record, pitching in 218 innings and starting 33 games for the Cardinals last season, per Baseball-Reference.com.

The Boston Globe reported earlier this month that the one-time all-star may sign with the Chicago Cubs in the offseason. Cubs president for baseball operations Theo Epstein was the one who signed Lackey to a five-year, $82.5 million contract when he was still with the Boston Red Sox back in 2009. Jon Lester of the Cubs is also a close friend of the Texas-native.

If the Diamondbacks strike out on Lackey, they could set their sights to other mid-rotation starters in the free agent market like Hisashi Iwakuma, Scott Kazmir and Mike Leake. They can also try to trade for Cleveland Indians starters Carlos Carrasco and Danny Salazar, per AZ Central.

Other names that may be on the trading block when the Winter Meetings start are the Oakland Athletics' Sonny Gray, the Atlanta Braves' Julio Teheran, the Milwaukee Brewers' Jimmy Nelson and Wily Peralta, the San Diego Padres' Tyson Ross as well as the Tampa Bay Rays' Jake Odorizzi, Erasmo Ramirez and Drew Smyly.

Arizona can also sign Japanese pitcher Kenta Maeda, who is expected to be posted by the Hiroshima Carp of the NBL. The Diamondbacks finished the 2015 season with a 79-83 record, good for third place in the NL West.
