Barcelona has been the most dominating soccer club in all of Europe over the last few years, but things are not so good financially for the Spanish league champions. According to reports, Barcelona is having some heavy financial problems which could cause them to either lose out on acquiring big name players, or even worse, have to sell a superstar.

Everything starts and ends with Lionel Messi.

Former Barcelona president Joan Laporta said he received multiple offers from clubs during his tenure but never once even considered dealing the Argentine superstar. Messi has spent his entire senior career with Barcelona breaking almost every imaginable record in franchise history including most career goals and most goals in a season. Messi has led Barcelona to seven La Liga titles, three Copa del Rey championships and four UEFA Champions League wins.

"When I was the capo of the club I received many proposals from Inter [Milan] and other clubs to pay Messi's release clause but I always said that it was impossible. If I were Barca president, Messi would never leave Barca," Laporta said.

The odds of Messi leaving Barcelona anytime soon are extremely slim. But here's where things get interesting.

Messi is currently out with a leg injury, and his South American teammates, Neymar and Luis Suarez, have been playing well without him. It's unlikely Suarez will be dealt. Neymar is one of the highest paid players in the world after Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi, and Laporta believes Barcelona will have to sell one of their superstar players, which could be Neymar.

The Brazilian forward is one of the most skilled and popular players in the world. He leads the team with eight goals and three assists this La Liga season, but he does have a heavy contract. Neymar is just 23 years old, and he is viewed as Messi's predecessor for Barcelona. Barcelona is trying to renegotiate contracts with both Neymar and Messi, and if everything works out in their favor, they will be able to keep both of them for the foreseeable future.

"The best solution is to sell big players. It has been said that Manchester United has been interested but that is the result of current mismanagement," Laporta went on to say. Manchester United is always being tied to big name players as they are the most successful English Premier League team of all time with 20 championships. Manchester United is also the most valuable EPL team.

This isn't coming out of the blue. Manchester United has been pursuing Neymar for quite some time. Reports indicated earlier in the year that Neymar and Manchester United could team up for the long-term in the future.
