Despite what some fans may have previously thought, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End may not be the end of Naughty Dog's flagship action-adventure series after all.

In a recent interview with Gamespot, Naughty Dog's director of communications, Arne Meyer, discussed the possibility of future entries to the Uncharted series.

"Do we continue the series or not? If things don't feel fresh or it doesn't feel like we have an actual story to tell, it doesn't feel like we're able to try new things or innovate with gameplay, then we'll start thinking about stepping away from it," Meyer said.

"Every time it's worked out in that we're like, oh yeah we have a story to tell."

However, Meyer didn't say for certain that the series would continue. What's more, Naughty Dog staff and developers have made it clear this will absolutely be the end of protagonist's Nathan Drake's saga.

Whether or not this opens the possibility for side characters, or maybe a new protagonist entirely to take the stage is yet to be seen.

Meyer also added that with the transition to the PlayStation 4, the development team felt it was "a natural time to step away," though he didn't specify whether that meant from Drake's story or the series as a whole.

With the recent success of Naughty Dog's The Last of Us DLC, the studio has also announced plans to release downloadable content for Uncharted 4. However, Meyer says he talked with game director Neil Druckmann, who said they "have no idea what we're going to do with that."

"We've committed to putting something together, and it has to be a high level of quality and have a really engaging story, and we've said that this is the final chapter. We have all these things we need to resolve at some point but we have no idea what that is," Meyer said.

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End is set for release on March 18, 2016, for PlayStation 4.
